During a press interview shortly after the VGA's, it was announced that the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta will be starting in Spring 2010. Invitations will be sent out to those who purchased a legitimate copy of Halo 3:ODST.

but you had to pre order it

No you didn't. I never remember Bungie saying anything about preordering the game to get the beta. you just needed to have your ODST disc.

It does say limited time offer on the card I got in the box with halo reach advertised... maybe it meant only certain people got it who bought it in a time limit... I dunno but I'm guessing if you have the card then you are eligable either way, alternatively they will probably do what they did on Crackdown for the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta and open it up to everyone on ODST.

yeah they did. pre ording odst gets you johnson and reach beta. now maybe it means if you pre order it you get the beta for free IDK

The beta has always been free. I'm just worried now 'cause of what X said.

I wouldn't worry KH, so long as you have ODST I think it's safe to say you'll be in the beta... they will more than likely activate a hidden part of the ODST disc which will grant you access to the beta just like they did with Crackdown (which had the Halo 3 Multiplayer Demo hidden on it).
