If you have been paying attention to the upcoming shooter, Medal of Honor, you probably have been noticing a ton of controversy with EA's use of the Taliban in the game. Basically the buzz about this whole issue is that at one point in the game you will be playing as the Taliban soldiers, which eventually has you killing U.S. soldiers. This whole issue has even headlined on Yahoo.com with the game being banned at U.S. army bases for this exact issue. After clicking on to read, I will explain my thoughts on this issue and whether it is wrong or right by EA.
This is not the first time that video games have caused some type of controversy with Americans. As most of you remember, Modern Warfare 2's No Russian level had you mowing down defenseless civilians in an airport. This level, even though brought an option to skip before the campaign started, still made many Americans upset as everyone still remembers 9/11 and other attacks.
Medal of Honor, on the other hand, has yet to be released, and most people have no idea about how long you will be playing as the Taliban or how much damage you will be doing as a Taliban soldier. Why I believe that this is a sour subject, terror attacks that is, for everyone around world, I believe this is not wrong for EA to do.
I'm an American, shouldn't I be upset about this? Of course I love this land that I am lucky to live upon, but I believe that this game will be showing real life. Sometimes I believe people outside of the gaming world want to shield their eyes from all that is bad happening with this world. We see every day images and video of Taliban soldiers killing Americans or other soldiers from countries. Why is a video game that isn't taking anyone's life bad? In my honest opinion, I believe that this could be wrong, if handled incorrectly by the developers of the game. While very little of this part of the single player has been revealed, there are ways that EA can make this portion of the game less controversial.
One start would be doing what Activision did for Modern Warfare 2, and this is to make this portion of the game skipable for those who will find this offensive. One of the things that made most people upset about the No Russian level in MW2, was that these civilians were unarmed, and that it was clearly just a massacre. Medal of Honor will surely have American firing back at you, which means you have ways of dying as the Taliban. Other ways can only be thought of by the developers, but hopefully will be carried out correctly so that this does not blow up their faces.
So what do you believe about this dilemma? Do you believe that playing as the Taliban while killing U.S. soldiers is right or wrong? Voice out your opinions in the comment section below, and also give us your ideas on how EA can correctly play out this section of the single player.
