Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios recently announced that Fable III will be broken down into downloadable episodes for sale on Xbox LIVE shortly after the title hits store shelves. The announcement came during the Game Horizon conference. “Soon after the retail launch we’re doing episodic. We break it down in chapters. We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour,” explained Molyneux.

By pursuing a traditional retail release in addition to an episodic release, Lionhead Studios is hoping to sell more than five million units of Fable III. “We are driving to sell more than five million units and to make a profit in excess of $150 million. We have to do that because if a franchise doesn’t reach that level it will inevitably wither,” continued Molyneux.

Is this a smart move by Molyneux? Will this pave the way for more retail downloads digitally? So many questions, and only time will tell when Fable III is released.

I would imagine that Fable II eposides did well enough to make it a considered move. I prefer purchasing in the shop, that way i get the whole game in one go, not wait for however long it would take for each part to get released.

The episode 1 of Fable 2 made me go out and buy the game, I'm now a massive fan of fable. Great idea

This is a smart move as far as making it episodic grants players a kick ass demo, wich in fact is part of the game so you will be able to achieve gamerscore, and keep your campaing progress if you decide to keep on playing-buying the game.

Besides, hard drive space is limited. To everyone. Period. So some users like me who have more than 50 arcade games and don't plan to stop there might consider purchasing the disc instead to save space for DLC.

As I previously sid, I know people who gave fable 2 a try and then purchased the disc, even people who are achievement freaks and gave the episode one demo a try, then popped out some achievements and considered it a taint to their gamerscore so had to got the whole game to raise it up to 1000G...

Business-wise, congrats Peter M.

edit. damn slashes show as number 7...same happens to euro
