Last week saw the release of Left 4 Dead 2's first lot of Downloadable Content in the form of an entirely new campaign known as The Passing. The campaign is set in between the Dead Center and Dark Carnival campaigns featured in the game originally and also sees you coming face to face with the old survivors from Left 4 Dead 1 - minus one familiar face - but more on that soon.
Basically the new survivors cannot proceed to Whispering Oaks because the bridge leading to it has been raised... by the original survivors who, have mixed feelings about the new stars of the game. For example Rochelle and Francis seem to get along fine, until she insults his shirt, and Ellis has a crush on Zoey (who doesn't). The deal is if you can help power the generator using scattered gas cans then they will lower the bridge for you whilst they cover your asses from a high vantage point.
Before this though you are made to run through underground river systems in which the atmosphere is very well portrayed - from the moment you find out that's where your headed to the end tunnel you feel isolated and very much in danger.
Death of a survivor

The Passing usually takes around 40 minutes to complete on Normal mode and only consists of three chapters as opposed to the usual 4/5 - it is still one more than the Crash Course DLC for the first L4D though. Introduced in the new campaign are the following:
The Fallen Survivor
A survivor who obviously wasn't immune to the virus and died trying to survive, he usually runs away from you when you spot him but if you are quick enough to kill him he will drop about 3 random items for you to take. He is harder to kill than a standard infected.
The Bride Witch
This isn't really something too new but it's just a normal witch in a Bridesmaid outfit.
Much like the grenade launcher in terms of non replenishable ammo - this heavy machine gun cuts through zombies like a hot knife through butter.
If you didn't receive a code for the baseball bat when you first got Left 4 Dead 2, you can now utilise the baseball bat in this campaign.
The golf club can be used as a melee weapon to knock the heads off of the infected.
These contain infinite amounts of a certain item (usually Molotovs, Pipe bombs, Bile bombs, Pills or Adrenaline), you can stand by them and use it's contents as much as you need to.
Obviously not much has changed in the gameplay because it's the same as the rest of the game but a lot of people are complaining about things which seemed to have been made a little harder - for example Chargers always hitting spot on all the time, multiple infected spawning at the same time - for example I had a spitter, smoker and a jockey attack me all at once as well as two smokers and a tank then a jockey shortly after.
The weather effects are some of my favourite in any game, the storm from a previous campaign makes an appearance sometimes making the atmosphere of the game intense, it impairs your perception in terms of sight and the ability to hear trademark infected sounds and it works extremely well.
With the new DLC came a new type of game mode called Mutation. Mutation is a mode where the rules of the mode change on a weekly basis. This keeps it fresh and fun. Whilst a lot of the mutation rules have not yet been found out, we can confirm that one will see you given a chainsaw with infinite gas and a shit load of zombies and told to have fun. Currently there is a rule where Realism mode is activated for the survivors but because it is a versus mode, this makes the lives of the infected much easier. Tune in every week to see what type of mutation is available.
The DLC costs 560MSP which some will always find a way to complain about but considering the amount that this DLC gives you (New Campaign, New Weapons and Infected, New Game Types, New Achievements and 2 new Avatar Awards) I think it is well worth the price and definitely a good purchase that will add continuous fun to the game for months to come.
I give it a 9/10!
